- 1–1.5 cups water
- 1 small onion (finely chopped)
- 1 small carrot (finely diced)
- 5-6 green beans (finely chopped)
- ¼ cup fresh green peas
- 2 tablespoon roasted peanuts
- 1 green chili (slit)
- ½ inch ginger (grated)
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 tablespoon oil or ghee
- Salt to taste
- Juice of ½ lemon
- Fresh coriander leaves (for garnish)
- 1–2 tablespoons grated coconut (optional)
Preparation & Cooking Time
- Prep: 10 minutes
- Soaking: 30 minutes
- Cook: 15 minutes
- Total: ~55 minutes
- Serves: 2–3
Method
1. Prep & Soak Millet
Rinse millet well and soak for at least 30 minutes. Drain after soaking.
2. Temper Spices
Heat oil/ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds; let them splutter. Add curry leaves, green chili, and grated ginger. Sauté until fragrant.
3. Sauté Veggies
Add chopped onions, carrots, beans, and peas. Sprinkle a little salt and sauté 3–4 minutes until veggies soften.

4. Add Millet & Cook
Add drained millet and roasted peanuts. Toss everything together for a minute. Pour in water and, if desired, add coconut. Stir, adjust salt, and bring to a boil.
5. Simmer & Finish
Lower flame, cover, and cook for 8–10 minutes until water is absorbed and millet grains are cooked and separate. If water evaporates early, sprinkle a little hot water as needed.
6. Garnish & Serve
Turn off heat. Mix in lemon juice and garnish with chopped coriander.
Tips for the Best Millet Upma
- Use any small-grain millets—barnyard, foxtail, kodo, or little millet—all work well.
- Soaking helps millet cook faster and fluffier.
- Finely chop or shred veggies for quick cooking and even texture.
- Skip green chili for kids or spice-sensitive eaters.
- For extra richness, sprinkle fresh grated coconut just before serving.
In my family, millet upma is a must-have on busy school mornings, especially when my grandmother insists on “health before haste!” The kids love crunching peanuts and experimenting with their favorite vegetable add-ins. Millet upma became our weekend tradition for years—always served with raita and plenty of laughter.
Conclusion
Warm, comforting, and loaded with nutrition, Millet Upma is a modern take on a timeless Indian breakfast. It’s easy to customize, budget-friendly, and perfect for anyone seeking a healthy start to the day.
